THE LION AIR

Lion Air took to the skies from Indonesia in 2000 with one aircraft in its fleet. Within eight years of operation, Lion Air now flies to more than 36 cities in Indonesia and many other destinations such as, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam on a fleet of brand new Boeing 737-900ER. 1

At present Lion Air has a fleet of 36 aircrafts. The fleet consists of 16 units MD 80-series, 5 units MD 90-series, 10 units B737-400, 2 units B737-300 and 3 feeder aircrafts of Dash 8.Lion Air provides two types of seats for its passengers - Economy Class and Business Class. 2

He also says Lion has signed an agreement with the Indonesian navy to develop and manage a section of Surabaya's Juanda Airport, which is Indonesia's second largest.The navy controls this section of the airport and Lion plans to develop a passenger terminal and aircraft maintenance hangar there, says Rusdi. 7

The Jeddah route is Lion Air's first long-haul flight, but its fourth international route after Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. 10

Its lineup is comprised of 10 Boeing 737-400s, 2 Boeing 737-300s, 11 McDonnell Douglas MD-82s, a McDonnell Douglas MD-83 and 5 McDonnell Douglas MD-90-30s. Bear in mind that the average aircraft in the Lion Air fleet is around 17 years old. 11

Lion also has well over 100 737-900ERs on order of which it will be receiving six this year, taking the number of this aircraft type in its fleet to 29. 12

From June 2009 Lion Air will start operating flights to Jeddah, will be using Boeing 747-400 ex Oasis Airlines. On 31 May 2009, the a picture of the first Boeing 747-400 was uploaded to airliners.net. 13
